Why Join?

So why should you join?

We go into bat for you when it comes to securing the best possible wages and working conditions, as well as campaigning for better funding for your students. For instance, thanks to the AEU, Victorian educators now have the best paid maternity leave and family leave provisions in the country! In a historic 2012 ruling, the AEU was a key union involved in securing a wage increase of up to 41% for disability, social and community sector workers, on the basis of gender-based undervaluation. The more members we have, the more power we have to make a difference.

We’ve got your back.

We can give you advice about workplace issues and even provide legal representation. You don’t have to know everything. We can tell you about everything from your maternity leave entitlements to negotiating a contract. When things are tough, we can also support you through a specific issue, like dealing with workplace bullying or supporting you through a Workcover claim. When you’re in a union, you’re not on your own.

We want to see more female educators in leadership positions, so we run excellent professional development workshops, conferences and mentoring to help you advance your career. Plus, once you get involved, you’ll instantly become part of community of dynamic, inspiring, clever and diverse educators. Lots of our members form life-long friendships through attending women’s conferences, training and volunteering on union campaigns.

Here at the union, many of us have been teachers ourselves. We understand, value and respect your work and we make it our business to make sure the government and the community does too. Our union leaders regularly speak out strongly in the media on key issues and policies that affect you and your students.

We lobby the government and legal system for big reforms. We fight fair, but we fight hard for the issues that matter most to you and your students. We’re a powerhouse team of organisers, lawyers and leaders, and together, we make things happen. Some of our current campaigns include: TAFE4ALL, Put Education 1st, Protect our Preschools and I Give a Gonski.

We have tons of handy online resources for you.

In Victoria, for instance, you can access the Parental leave and Flexible Work Options kits, and you can have a read of the AEU’s very cool Gender Equity policy.

As part of your membership, you’ll also receive an automatic subscription to our various magazines and e-bulletins to help you keep you up-to-date with relevant information for your sector.

And a final sweetener? Your union fees are 100% tax deductable.

But that’s enough from us. To get the real low-down:
